NUJ Netherlands member Marvin Hokstam, who is originally from the Caribbean, has been scrutinising the media coverage of the, often, heated debate around Zwarte Piet. He takes his perspective as a black journalist to tell some home truths about the so-called liberal society of today’s Netherlands.

Marvin has also been elected as a member of the NUJ’s Black Members Council, having been nominated by the branch last summer. He is taking his campaign against Zwarte Piet there too to raise awareness among our UK colleagues.

Members can be sure of our union’s position on race and equality by looking at our Code of Conduct, in particular article nine, stating journalists should produce “no material likely to lead to hatred or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age, gender, race, colour, creed, legal status, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation”
